Equality legislation is a tool that helps the College to deliver learner-centred services that are accessible to everyone who needs them. It will also help us to become a model employer, attracting and retaining  the best employees who reflect the population served.

It is a legal requirement under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 as amended by the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 for all public authorities to develop and implement a Disability Equality Scheme (DES).

Disability Equality Scheme

The College developed the attached Single Equality Scheme in July 2009 and as such took account of the Equality Bill as it stood at that time.  The college will review the scheme in the light of the recent (April 2010) enactment of the bill and the impending publication of the related codes of practice (July and Autumn 2010).The college is currently developing a corresponding action plan.

The college welcomes comments from all stakeholders on all its Equality schemes.

The Action Plan
A key part of this Disability Equality Scheme is the action plan which covers the life of the scheme. This will ensure that the College builds on what it has already achieved, further embedding disability equality into mainstream activity. The plan sets out the steps we will take to implement the Disability Equality Scheme and articulates what we will do to reflect:
  • the priorities of disabled staff and learners
  • the College’s strategic priorities
  • the outcomes we aim to achieve
  • a realistic timetable
This plan will not be static but will change and develop over time as new issues arise and tasks are completed, so keep coming back to check.
